Remove unwanted residue

Washing your vegetables helps to remove pesticides, dirt and other contaminants. It is not always possible to know what is in the vegetables you buy. Pesticides can be harmful to your health, and it is important to reduce them by washing vegetables thoroughly. This applies to both organic and conventionally grown products, because traces of pesticides can also be present in organic vegetables.

Avoid bacteria and pathogens

Bacteria and pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella can be found on the skin of vegetables. Think of vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers that are often harvested by hand and come into contact with the soil. By washing them well, you can significantly reduce the risk of food poisoning.

Keep your vegetables fresh and tasty

It is not only your health that is important, but also the taste of your dishes. By cleaning your vegetables properly, you will get a much fresher and more flavorful bite. Dirty leftovers or soil can affect the taste and make your dish less appetizing. So in addition to the health benefits, washing your vegetables also makes for a better eating experience!

Tips for proper washing

Use cold water: For most vegetables, cold water is sufficient to remove dirt and any chemicals. However, there are vegetables that benefit from a slightly more thorough cleaning, such as spinach and kale. You can use a special vegetable brush for this or let the vegetables soak for a while.

Always wash before you eat or prepare them: Even if you peel vegetables, it is still important to wash them thoroughly. This prevents bacteria or dirt from the peel from getting onto the edible part of the vegetable when you cut it.

Do not use soap or detergents: Vegetables do not need to be washed with soap, because this can leave behind residues that can be harmful. Simply rinsing well with water is usually sufficient.

Note: loss of nutrients

Although washing vegetables can remove a small percentage of water-soluble vitamins (such as vitamin C), the health benefits of washing far outweigh the small loss of nutrients. It is a small price to pay for a clean and healthy product!
