This is why showering daily may not be a good idea

The discussion about the best time to shower – morning or evening – often assumes that you take a shower every day. Although showering daily feels fresh and pleasant, it may actually be better to skip a day every now and then. Why? We will explain!

A natural protective layer

If you have made it a habit to shower every day, it may not feel hygienic to skip a shower once in a while. But it is actually better for your skin to do so.

Your epidermis has a protective layer full of good bacteria. A hot shower dries out this layer of skin, making it easier for bad bacteria to penetrate. Taking a hot shower every day can therefore lead to dry and sensitive skin, and even cause skin problems.

Take a shower every other day

What can you do better? Shower in the shower cabin less regularly. Dermatologists recommend showering about three to four times a week. On the days you don't shower, you can easily clean your face, armpits and intimate areas with a washcloth. This way you stay completely fresh.

Extra sensitive skin

If your skin feels irritated or dry quickly, even if you shower less, choose a mild shower gel without perfume or other irritants. After showering, apply a nourishing, unscented ointment. This helps to protect and moisturize your skin.

What if there is no other option?

If you exercise every day, do heavy work or have an allergy, it may be better to shower daily. Fortunately, you can protect your skin by applying these simple tips:

Keep the temperature low

A hot shower may feel nice, but it can dry out your skin considerably. Try to keep the water temperature around 37 degrees to protect your skin.

Don't shower for too long

Just like a hot shower, a long shower can irritate your skin. You don't need to wash your hair every day, so a few minutes is often enough to freshen up. Rinsing off quickly prevents your skin from drying out.

Apply moisturizer

Many people take their time over their weekend shower routine – washing hair, exfoliating, shaving and moisturizing. But if you shower daily, the last step is especially important. After every shower, apply a fine, nourishing body lotion to your skin. This will help prevent your skin from drying out.

Radiant skin

Do you shower daily or skip a day every now and then? How often and how long you should shower depends mainly on your skin type and your personal needs. On average, showering three to four times a week is sufficient. Apply a good moisturizer afterwards to enjoy hydrated, healthy and radiant skin!
